A randomized clinical trial is a medical experiment in which patients are randomly assigned to treatment arms. In STA305, phase III two-arm trials are the standard setting for linking design, hypothesis testing, power, and sample size.
Randomization is what makes causal comparisons between treatments scientifically defensible.
