Pairwise Error Rate
The pairwise error rate is the Type I error rate attached to a single pairwise comparison.
If one pair is tested at level $\alpha$, then its pairwise error rate is $\alpha$. The important point in STA305 is that controlling each pairwise error rate at $\alpha$ does not automatically control the family-wise error rate across all pairs.
