The assignment mechanism is
$$P(T \mid Y(0), Y(1)),$$the probability of a treatment assignment $T$ given the potential outcomes. It formalizes how units end up treated or untreated.
In causal inference, valid reasoning depends heavily on whether this mechanism is random, known, or confounded with potential outcomes.
